Good afternoon Members of the Board,
 
I want you to know that I understand the difficult situation that all of you are in today with the decision that you must make concerning the reopening of the schools. I do not believe that the three options sitting in front of you should be your only choices. These options are not innovative or creative and some schools or levels may need additional flexibility.

We want to thank all of you who helped contribute to CFT/CFOP’s “Our Lives, Our Safety” Resolution on Reopening Schools”! It is the result of over 1,000 hours of focus groups, survey responses, dialogue and research, and offers a framework of the concerns you shared about CPS employees and students safely returning to school given the deadly nature of COVID-19.

Cincinnati’s teachers were left heartbroken when Governor DeWine decided last week that school buildings would stay closed for the rest of this school year.

Since the sudden Mid-March closure order, teachers have worked with their principals and team members to provide distance learning. PURPOSE: The COVID-19 virus pandemic is a public health emergency. It is critical that the Cincinnati Public School (CPS) District ensure that we are doing everything in our power to keep our students, their families, and our staff safe. The Cincinnati Federation of Teachers (CFT) has convened a rapid response taskforce that will delineate a set of necessary conditions that we will recommend to the Board of Education in order for staff and students to safely return to in-school instruction for the 2020-2021
