Reduction In Force [RIF] Update (email sent 6.30.20)

Good Afternoon Members,

I want to share with you the steps we are taking, following my address to the Board of Education meeting yesterday. (We will send a copy of the address in the weekly updates)

Earlier today I shared a letter to the Board of Education and Superintendent Mitchell to express my disappointment in the decisions that came out of the June 29, 2020 Board of Education Business Meeting.

The way the Administration and Board has been patting themselves on the back throughout this process is an injustice to the CPS community, especially when CFT, parents, and citizens spent months studying the issues, offering their suggestions and voicing their support for best practices, yet the administration’s plans reflected none of that input.

The district’s plans were skeletal, failed to include critically important details, and were voted on in haste. Yesterday’s board meeting concluded with a decision to send layoff notices to hundreds of employees, though there has been no public discussion or discussion with employee unions regarding why layoffs may be necessary.

The Administration provided no information and no details about their announced RIF plan, which has caused widespread anxiety and confusion.

I want you to know that there is a process in our contract(s) about RIF’s, and should this happen, we will make sure all procedures are followed. We are advocating this not happen, as the Reopening Plan the Board approved yesterday appears to need MORE staff, not less. We will need all-hands-on deck to deliver the education our children deserve, and our buildings should not be cut.

Finally, CFT is performing a complete audit of the CPS budget because we do not have faith in the numbers the District presented yesterday.

Please join me in calling for more transparency and accountability by the District by emailing the Board of Education- davisph@cps-k12.org, Superintendent Mitchell - mitchec@cpsboe.k12.oh.us and Treasurer Wagner - wagnerj@cpsboe.k12.oh.us with your concerns.

In Solidarity,

President Julie Sellers
